Blog / Masking Tape Guide – How to Save Time Painting

June 9, 2023

When it comes to painting projects, masking tape is an essential tool that can save you time and ensure clean and precise lines. In this guide, we will cover everything you need to know about masking tape, including how to choose the right tape for your project and troubleshoot common issues.

Understanding Masking Tape

Masking tape is a type of adhesive tape that is specifically designed for painting projects. It consists of thin and flexible paper with a pressure-sensitive adhesive backing. The adhesive is designed to provide a strong bond while still allowing for clean and easy removal without leaving residue behind.

Preparing the Painting Area

To ensure a smooth process, we highly recommend preparing your space before applying any sort of tape or surface protection to your surfaces. Clean your surfaces with a damp microfiber to remove any dust or dirt. Adhesive tape will not stick to surfaces if they are not properly cleaned, which may result in unwanted paint dripping into your protected surface.

Choosing the Right Masking Tape

When choosing your masking tape, it is important to consider what type of surface you’ll be protecting, what type of paint you are using, and the duration of your project. Trimaco offers three different masking tapes to fit the needs of any paint job.

  • BlueEdge Painting Tape: This traditional blue painter’s tape is designed with crepe paper, making it easy to work with. BlueEdge is designed to be left off most surfaces (both inside and outside) for 14 days. Ideal for protecting baseboard, trim, drywall, and more.
  • PerfectEdge Painting Tape: This light-blue painter’s tape is easy to work with and can be applied to smooth or rough surfaces including wood, glass, and drywall. Designed with a stronger adhesive to ensure crisp, straight lines if removed within 14 days.
  • LowTack Painting Tape: LowTack is a low adhesive flatback white tape. Ideal for protecting freshly painted surfaces and wallpaper, this masking tape will not pull paint or finish off surfaces if removed within 14 days.

Troubleshooting Common Masking Tape Issues

Not all paint jobs go as smoothly as we hope. We’ve compiled a list of common issues you may encounter when using masking tape and how to troubleshoot them:

  • Paint seepage: If you notice paint seepage under the edges of the masking tape, it may be due to improper tape application or the wrong type of tape. Ensure that the tape is applied firmly and pressed down along the edges to create a tight seal. Consider using a high adhesion masking tape or adding an additional layer of tape for added protection.
  • Tape lifting: If the masking tape starts to peel or lift off the surface before you’re done painting, it can result in uneven lines and messy edges. Make sure to clean your surface and let it dry thoroughly prior to tape application.
  • Ripping tape when removing: If the masking tape tears or rips while removing it from your freshly painted surface, it can make the painting process frustrating and time-consuming. When removing tape from your surface, do it slowly and at a 45-degree angle to minimize the risk of tearing and pulling off paint from the wall.

Save Time. Save Money

Using Masking Tape throughout your paint job helps protect surfaces and achieve straight lines. Reduce the risk of slip-ups and drips with a dependable masking tape. To save time applying, use masking tapes with a hand masker for a quick and easy application.
