Applications / Bathtub Protection During Construction

May 23, 2019

Imagine you’re remodeling your bathroom, you drop a hammer and chip the bathtub. Upon your inspection of the damage, you realize there’s a chip right in the middle of the bottom of it. You may be able to repair the chip, but it most likely will require continual maintenance. Wouldn’t it have just been easier to protect the tub in the first place?

One of the biggest struggles when it comes to protecting bathrooms during a renovation or remodel is protecting the bathtub. At an average of $2,000, bathtubs are an expensive feature and must be protected while other work occurs in the bathroom. Whether you’re painting, plumbing, tile installing or remodeling the bathroom, it will save you time, money and your reputation in the long run to protect the bathtub right off the bat.

Choosing Your Surface Protection

When it comes to choosing the appropriate protection for your job, it really depends on what kind of work will be occurring in your space. Lighter protection will be necessary in the instance of painting, while something more heavy duty and impact resistant would be a wiser choice when remodeling. Think “What is the weight of my tools and materials I’ll be using?” If you run the risk of any level of damage when they hit the floor, err on the side of caution and use a heavy duty surface protector.

Types of Bathtub Protectors

  • X•Board Paint + Remodel

X-Board protects all types of surfaces and is perfect for your paint and remodeling jobs. It’s lightweight and durable, making it easy to work with, yet is heavy duty enough to protect from tools and material. No need to worry about scratches or dings! The Spill Block® technology ensures no paint, mud or water will leak through. X-Board is also 100% recyclable, making it an eco-friendly option. This product is suitable for jobs where tougher bathtub protection during construction is needed.

  • Stay Put® Surface Protector

This surface protector features a slip resistant tacky backing which will adhere easily without tape! The Stay Put Surface Protector is repositionable and forms easily to the curves and angles of a bathtub. Once it’s pulled up, you’ll be happy to find zero residue left behind. It’s also padded to provide protection against impact from your jobsite materials. Water, paint and other liquids don’t stand a chance leaking through this waterproof surface protector.

  • Stay Put® Canvas Plus Dropcloth

For paint jobs in the bathroom, the Stay Put Canvas Plus dropcloth is for you. The rubber backing makes it 300% more slip resistant than 8oz canvas. This will keep it from slipping and sliding around a bathtub made from any various material. The canvas top absorbs, while the middle layer of plastic provides leak-resistant protection. The skid-resistant bottom layer also provides extra cushion. Leak-resistant, absorbent and non-slip – what more could you ask for in a dropcloth?

how to protect the bathtub during construction

  1. Wipe the bathtub down before applying your temporary protection. This will ensure no dirt or debris is left behind, risking scratches or other blemishes.
  2. Allow bathtub to dry, then apply your surface protection. Measure and cut material if necessary.
  3. Tape down with low tack (or other suitable tape) to hold protection in place. We suggest doing a spot test to make sure the tape is suitable for the area you’re using it.
  4. Get to work and have peace of mind that your tub will be perfectly protected from any damage that could occur!
  5. Whether you’re remodeling, tiling, or painting, protecting your assets while doing the job will save you time and money. Check out our catalog for our full line of construction site and floor protection products.
